I will treat everything you share with me during counselling as highly confidential.
However, there are several limits to confidentiality to be aware of:
- Like all members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I am required to undertake regular clinical supervision. As part of that I may discuss details of our work with my supervisor but all efforts will be made to protect your identity and it will be treated with confidence.
- Counsellors are legally required to report disclosure of certain serious criminal activities such as terrorism, money laundering, and drug trafficking.
- If I believe your welfare or the welfare of others to be seriously at risk it may be necessary for me to advise or consult with another appropriate professional, for example, your GP. Except in exceptional circumstances, however, I will discuss this with you before taking any action.
- In the event of my death or temporary incapacity, your details will be passed on to a fellow professional, who will contact you to inform you of the situation and discuss your needs.
- Wherever possible, I will consult you before breaching confidentiality.
